Biography

Johannes (John) Van Sandt was born in about 1683 in the Dutch-founded community of New Utrecht, now part of Brooklyn (Kings Co.), New York City, New York. At the time of his birth, local administration was still carried out in Dutch but the city and colony were firmly under English rule. John's parents, both born in the Netherlands, were Garret Stoffelse Van Sandt and Lysbeth (Cornelis) Van Sandt.

On February 17, 1703, Johannes (John) married Leah Groesbeck, b. 1679, daughter of Jacob Groesbeck who accompanied the young couple from New York to Bensalem, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, where they purchased land to farm. He purchased land on 1 Aug 1704 in Bensalem, Bucks, Pennsylvania:

Thomas Stevenson, yeoman, of Bucks Co, PA to Johannes Van Sandt, yeoman, of same, for 100 lbs., 125 acres line of Harman Van Sandt and Joseph Growdon, purchased of Thomas Revel (executor of the estate of Elizabeth Tatham) of Burlington, West New Jersey. Signed Thomas Stevenson. Wit: A. Wibardlis Vansandt, Jonas Vansandt, and Adolfas (x) Bruer.

John later reconveyed this land to Stevenson on 17 May 1714, who immediately conveyed it to John's brother, Harman. On the same date, Stevenson conveyed to John 500 acres of land on Elk River, Cecil County, Maryland. It is probable that his intention to move to Maryland was frustrated by his sickness and death. [1]

John and Rachel (Groesbeck) Van Sandt had 3 children, all born in Bensalem Bucks Co., Pennsylvania:[2]

  1. Anne Van Sandt, b. 1705 in Bucks Co., Pennsylvania
  2. John Van Sandt, b. March 2, 1708, in Bucks Co., Pennsylvania
  3. Rachel Van Sandt, christened: June 15, 1711, in Southampton Dutch Reformed Church, Bucks Co, Penna.

October 30, 1714 Will

John made his will on 30 Oct 1714 in Bensalem, Bucks, Pennsylvania. It was proved 6 Jan 1715.

Johannes Vansant, yeoman. His will devises to son John forty shillings, and to his wife Leah his personal estate and the use of his Maryland real estate, if not sold, during life for "the education and maintenance of herself and children."
Believing that it will be necessary to sell his Maryland real estate, he empowers Stophel Vansant and Bartholomew Jacobs, Trustees. If land is not sold, it is to be valued and divided between two Sons, they paying their sisters equal shares. The only child mentioned was John. Wife Leah, extx. Wit: Thomas Stevenson, Hannah Vansant, Nicholas Van Hooren.[3]

VanSant-45 and Van Sandt-9 appear to represent the same person because: This is the oldest paternal ancestor in this chain in need of a merge into the NNS PPP. No tree conflicts. Thanks! Merging out of concatenation. First record is his marriage record.
